A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens inside the eye that gradually interferes with clear vision. Cataracts develop slowly as proteins in the lens break down and clump together over time — the result is vision that looks hazy, washed out, or blurred, kind of like trying to see through a foggy window.
While cataracts are most commonly associated with aging, they are not limited to older adults. Some develop them due to an eye injury, diabetes, prolonged use of certain medications, or other health conditions. Regardless of how cataracts developed, the condition is treatable — and no one should have to accept worsening vision as something they just have to live with.
Over time, the protein structure in the natural lens deteriorates:
Most people experiencing early cataract symptoms assume it's just aging. As a result, they stop driving at night, hold things farther away to read, pass on hobbies they used to enjoy, and quietly shrink their world without realizing how much clarity they've lost.
📞 That conversation starts with a single call. Reach Holmdel Eye Center at (732) 828-5190 or book by clicking the button below.

Cataracts affect the whole family, not just the patient with the diagnosis. If you're experiencing vision changes yourself, pay attention to these signs:
Whether you're the one noticing your own vision isn't what it used to be, a spouse watching changes your partner hasn't acknowledged, or a caretaker whose loved one's world seems to be getting smaller — trust what you're seeing. Dr. Abdelhady welcomes family members at every appointment so everyone hears the information together.

When a patient is told they have cataracts, and when they are told they need surgery, can be two separate incidents — and the space between them can feel confusing. Many people live with early cataracts for years before surgery makes sense.
In the early stages, Dr. Abdelhady may recommend managing symptoms with an updated glasses prescription, stronger lighting, or anti-glare coatings. However, cataracts are progressive — eventually surgery becomes the most effective path to restoring clear vision.
It's time when cataracts are getting in the way of daily life:
There's no specific test score that triggers surgery — it's a quality-of-life decision. Dr. Abdelhady will never pressure anyone to move faster than they're comfortable with.

Cataract surgery is one of the safest medical procedures performed anywhere in the world. The clouded natural lens is gently removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The patient arrives, has the surgery, and goes home the same day. The eye is numbed with drops — no needles, no general anesthesia — and most patients feel only light pressure, if anything at all.
An older technique with higher complication risk and longer recovery. Rarely performed in the US today — not something Dr. Abdelhady offers, but included so patients understand how far surgical options have advanced. Safety: 6/10 | Efficacy: 7/10 | Recovery Speed: 5/10 | Precision: 5/10
The most common technique worldwide. A small hand-made incision is created using a blade, and an ultrasonic probe breaks the lens into fragments removed by suction. Excellent track record and widely covered by insurance. Safety: 9/10 | Efficacy: 9/10 | Recovery Speed: 9/10 | Precision: 8/10
The most advanced approach available — and the method Dr. Abdelhady uses. A computer-guided femtosecond laser maps the entire eye in 3D, making cuts thinner than a human hair with accuracy not possible by hand. Safety: 9/10 | Efficacy: 9/10 | Recovery Speed: 9/10 | Precision: 10/10
One of the most important decisions in cataract surgery is selecting the new replacement lens. Dr. Abdelhady takes the time to explain each option in plain language and helps choose the IOL that best fits the patient's daily life and vision goals.
The most customizable lens — after implantation, it can be fine-tuned with UV light treatments in the office until perfect, then permanently locked in. Visual Quality: 10/10 | Night Vision: 9/10 | Precision: 10/10 | Stability: 9/10
The gold standard for patients who want to minimize dependence on glasses — provides clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances. Visual Quality: 8/10 | Range: 10/10 | Night Vision: 7/10 | Stability: 9/10
Designed to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery, building the correction directly into the lens for clearer distance vision. Visual Quality: 9/10 | Night Vision: 9/10 | Precision: 9/10 | Stability: 9/10
An advanced monofocal with an engineered profile that reduces optical distortion — exceptional clarity especially in low-light conditions like night driving. Visual Quality: 9/10 | Night Vision: 10/10 | Halos: 10/10 | Stability: 10/10
Creates a smooth, continuous range of clear vision from distance through intermediate — fewer halos than traditional multifocal lenses. Visual Quality: 8/10 | Range: 7/10 | Night Vision: 7/10 | Stability: 8/10
The most commonly implanted lens in the world — clear, stable vision at one distance with no halos or glare. Most patients use reading glasses for close-up tasks. Visual Quality: 8/10 | Night Vision: 9/10 | Halos: 9/10 | Stability: 10/10
"A 72-year-old who plays golf every weekend needs a completely different lens than a 65-year-old who spends hours reading. That's why I never recommend a lens until I understand how the patient actually lives their life."

Cataract surgery is a series of appointments spread over several weeks. Transportation will need to be arranged for several visits as dilating drops temporarily blur vision. Having a family member or caretaker involved throughout makes the entire experience smoother.
Step 1 — Initial Evaluation: Thorough eye exam including visual acuity, cataract assessment, retina and optic nerve check, astigmatism evaluation, and precise measurements to guide lens selection. Family members are encouraged to attend.
Step 2 — Recommendation & Treatment Plan: Dr. Abdelhady shares findings in plain language. Outcomes may be: monitor for now, one eye needs surgery, or both eyes need surgery (done separately). No deadline to decide.
Step 3 — Pre-Surgery Preparation: Prescribed antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops, medication adjustments if needed, eating/drinking restrictions, and arranging transportation for surgery day and the day-after follow-up.
Step 4 — Surgery Day: The eye is numbed with drops — no needles — and mild IV sedation helps the patient relax. The laser creates a precise incision, the clouded lens is removed, and the new IOL is placed. Most patients feel only light pressure. Goes home same day.
Call (732) 828-5190 immediately if you experience: sudden or severe pain, significant redness that worsens, sudden vision loss, flashing lights, or a shadow across the visual field. These are rare — but do not wait.
Steps 5–8 — Follow-Up & Recovery: Day-after exam, ongoing follow-up visits over coming weeks, second eye surgery if needed (scheduled after first eye heals), and a final check once healing is complete. Dr. Abdelhady monitors every step personally.

If another doctor has already recommended cataract surgery but something didn't feel right — the visit felt rushed, questions didn't get answered, you weren't ready to commit — you're not alone. Getting a second opinion before eye surgery is one of the smartest things you can do.
Dr. Abdelhady welcomes second opinion consultations. He'll review previous findings, do his own thorough examination, and give his honest assessment — even if that means telling you the first doctor got it right. No pressure, no ego, no judgment.
"I tell every second opinion patient that I'm here to make sure you have all the information you need. If the first doctor was right, I'll tell you. If I see something different, I'll explain exactly what and why."

Cataract surgery is one of the safest procedures in all of medicine. Serious complications are rare — but every patient and family member deserves the full picture.
Temporary Blurriness: Common in the first days as the eye adjusts to the new lens. Improves steadily day by day.
Dry Eyes: A gritty feeling is normal during healing. Lubricating drops are part of the recovery plan.
Floaters: Small specks are usually harmless. However, a sudden burst of new floaters, flashing lights, or a dark shadow spreading across the visual field requires an immediate call to our office.
Light Sensitivity: Lights feel brighter after surgery because the new lens is crystal clear. Sunglasses help significantly.
Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO): Months or years later, vision may become hazy again — this is not the cataract returning. It's resolved quickly with a brief in-office laser procedure called a YAG capsulotomy.
Infection: Extremely rare. Following the prescribed drop schedule is the single most important prevention measure.

Yes. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world. Complications are extremely rare. Dr. Abdelhady uses advanced laser-assisted techniques for an even higher level of precision.
No. The eye is fully numbed with drops. Most patients receive mild IV sedation to relax. Most people feel only light pressure, if anything at all. There are no needles around the eye.
It depends on the lens chosen. Standard monofocal lenses may still require reading glasses. Advanced multifocal or EDOF lenses can greatly reduce or eliminate the need for glasses altogether.
No. Once the clouded lens is removed, cataracts cannot return. The capsule behind the new lens can occasionally become hazy (PCO) — easily treated with a quick in-office YAG capsulotomy.
Holmdel Eye Center accepts Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Horizon BCBS NJ, Humana, Medicare, TRICARE, AmeriHealth Caritas, MagnaCare, QualCare, Clover Health, Braven Health, and more. Call (732) 828-5190 to confirm your coverage.
Each eye is done separately, allowing the first to heal before the second is treated. Caretakers should plan for two full rounds of appointments and recovery support.
Traditional surgery uses manual blades. Laser-assisted surgery uses a computer-guided femtosecond laser for greater precision, 3D eye mapping, and a procedure customized to the eye's unique anatomy. The laser also pre-softens the cataract, requiring less energy during removal.
